New VLC Can Copy DVDs?

Even encrypted ones, apparently.

I've only ever used it as a player, so have never looked into its other functions.

I use an old version. I installed a newer one after my hard drive crash, but I went back to the one I had before because I didn't like the changes they made to it (the look but also some screen cap controls which were more difficult to access).

As interesting (and awesome) as this is, I won't use it.

Edit: I followed the link and I chose to download the new version (I won't install it for now) but it may come in handy later, especially if it has to be taken off the web.

Hmmm... I used the screen cap function for the very first time a few days ago, on the new version, and here I was impressed at how easy it was (ctrl-s). I still have a much older version on my HD along with the new one, so maybe I need to see how much easier the capping is with it.

I use PowerDVD for capping actual DVDs, but needed to cap an avi file, so had decided to give VLC a try.

I think it was version 0.9 giving me trouble (currently using 0.8). I might just install 1.0 and see how I like it. In any case, as I have the installer for 0.8, I can still put it back on.

VLC is the only player I can cap with it. I used to have Power DVD before my hard drive crash, but didn't get that one back.

Edit: what I like with 0.8 is that I can make screencaps via the menu that appears when I right-click. With 0.9, you have to right-click, scroll down a first menu, then another. So it was much longer. I prefer right-clicking over using keyboard shortcuts.

I also don't like automated screencapping as I'm also never interested in getting a whole movie/episode, just certain scenes and/or characters.

Hmmm. What I need is something that will let me put the vhs tapes I have which are out of print onto DVDs. They're never going to put them on DVD.

I hooked a DVD recorder up to record my VHS tapes. I just used my regular VCR, hit play and the DVD recorder recorded it through the TV. I know they do sell VHS/DVD Recorder combo units so you don't have to go to that much trouble.

I tried that, but the copy protection on the VHS defeats me. I have a combo unit. Sigh.

I'm not mechanically inclined, and the idea of hooking the vcr unit on one into the tv and the dvd unit from the other recording it hurts my head.

I do software. Software. I don't do hardware. If I can at all possibly avoid it...
