So we've finally started watching all the Merlins we have on the DVR (we just finished E07). We're really enjoying it despite the fact that the historical inaccuracy is making my toes curl. I really wish somebody somewhere would make a a TV series or a movie using the actual time period, etc.. Anyway, back to Merlin. I am enjoying it, but as usual, I don't have a lot of interest in the leads - I'm drawn to Morgana and really wish she played a bigger part. I don't like Arthur at all, though Merlin is sweet in a dorky teenage boy sort of way.
More Morgana!
That Lancelot comes back. Him I liked.
The Merlin in the stocks thing ends; it's getting really old.
Arthur displays something to make him worthy to be *the* Arthur.
Some sort of idea how a lady's maid becomes Arthur's queen. Assuming they even stick with that part of the legend, of course.
And yes, you may spoil me with abandon!

Episode 12 is mostly about Morgana.
Lancelot returning: must wait for S2. I'm thinking there is development toward the Gwen becoming more than just Morgana's handmaiden in S2.
Honestly, you have to check your historical accuracy shoes at the door. That's not what this show is about. ;)

Date: 2009-08-19 02:44 am (UTC)From:*spoiler* from what I've read, Lancelot is coming back next season. For how long? Don't have a clue. Just what I heard.
I hope they use Morgana more next season. And once you're finished with the season, you'll understand why. They don't utilize her at all in a good fashion in the last few episodes. :\
There is actually one legend that says Gwenivere was a lady's maid. Not one of the more popular ones, though, but it does exist. Go figure.

Yeah, I'd have stopped at the first time I saw the castle otherwise. Not to mention, I normally am not a fan of shows aimed at teens, even when I was a teen! So the fact it's kept me watching is a big plus in its favour. Now I shall just have to await the return of Lancelot!

Date: 2009-08-19 02:59 am (UTC)From:I tell myself that Merlin didn't really exsist anyway and try to ignore the total anachronisms that abound. After all I have watched (god forbid) Camelot and First Knight, so really it's not that bad.
I agree about more Morgana. I want to see how she turns out and if she becomes Morgan Le Fey.
I've got hooked on the fic from this fandom. There's some wonderful stories out there. So much of it's Arthur/Merlin, and strangely for me I'm actually reading more of it than anything else. I'm happy to rec some if you like :) There's also some thoughtfull meta out there that I've just started reading - I love meta.
Arthur grows more and more during the episodes and I liked him much more at the end than the beginning.

Glad to hear about Arthur. I am hopeful!

Date: 2009-08-19 06:37 am (UTC)From:But, as you know (Since you've heard me do it) I grumble about the inaccuracies of the episodes...
"Camelot? Pendragon wasn't in Camelot!"
"Arthur wasn't raised by his father!"
"Merlin isn't the same general age as Arthur!"
"That can't be the right castle for the time period!"
"Chain mail and plate mail? It's too soon!"
etc, etc, etc...
But, let me grumble quietly over the inaccuracies, and otherwise... I'm happy.

Date: 2009-08-19 02:54 pm (UTC)From:Now what exactly do you mean by actual time period? Because, depending on which version of the myth you subscribe to, there are currently (I think) four different periods of history that Arthur may have lived (if he lived at all).
Personally, I subscribe to the Welsh Iron Age chief theory, but of course I would *grin*
I think of Merlin as being the Smallville of Arthurian legend - just leave your books and knowledge at the door because none of it applies here. Doesn't stop it being fun as hell though. :)
I got really sick of the stocks too. Hopefully in S2 Arthur will stop letting him take the blame for everything.

Date: 2009-08-19 02:59 pm (UTC)From:There is actually a version of the Arthurian legend where Arthur is raised by Uther (and bugger if it escapes my memory right now) but that is a ridiculously rare version that only medieval literature types have even read so I really don't accept that explanation anyway. As I said *points below*, think of Merlin as Smallville for Arthur and you'll get along fine.
You have my sympathies though, both of you, even Indy has been slightly spoiled by my Egyptology degree *grin*.

Never seen Smallville, so I assume it's not really Superman?
Oh, I'm watching it and I had heard it wasn't very historically accurate, I was just a little flabbergasted at how bad. And people complained about Convington Cross! Which I liked even so [g]

Yeah, I bet one day, when they do a sitcom or drama in a pharmacy, I'll probably scream at the tv quite a bit.
I do now for pharmaceutical commercials.
