So we've finally started watching all the Merlins we have on the DVR (we just finished E07). We're really enjoying it despite the fact that the historical inaccuracy is making my toes curl. I really wish somebody somewhere would make a a TV series or a movie using the actual time period, etc.. Anyway, back to Merlin. I am enjoying it, but as usual, I don't have a lot of interest in the leads - I'm drawn to Morgana and really wish she played a bigger part. I don't like Arthur at all, though Merlin is sweet in a dorky teenage boy sort of way.

More Morgana!

That Lancelot comes back. Him I liked.

The Merlin in the stocks thing ends; it's getting really old.

Arthur displays something to make him worthy to be *the* Arthur.

Some sort of idea how a lady's maid becomes Arthur's queen. Assuming they even stick with that part of the legend, of course.

And yes, you may spoil me with abandon!

You will start to see this happen. He's young, and a bit of a prat. But there are glimmers of the king he will someday become.

Episode 12 is mostly about Morgana.
Lancelot returning: must wait for S2. I'm thinking there is development toward the Gwen becoming more than just Morgana's handmaiden in S2.

Honestly, you have to check your historical accuracy shoes at the door. That's not what this show is about. ;)

YAY! for ep 12 [g]

What season is it in now in the UK? 3?

Yeah, I'd have stopped at the first time I saw the castle otherwise. Not to mention, I normally am not a fan of shows aimed at teens, even when I was a teen! So the fact it's kept me watching is a big plus in its favour. Now I shall just have to await the return of Lancelot!

Nope, the UK is awaiting S2, just like we are. It's due to start in September. It's not specifically geared toward teens, really, but rather to the family hour.

Cool! For some reason I thought people on my flist had been talking about it for a lot longer.

Okay, I just thought it was aimed at teens since the two focus characters were. Seems like everyone is either under 20 or over 50 [g]

Oh we have, it's just the bloody BBC have made us wait forever for a new series. *pouts*

This show is a guilty pleasure. The historical inaccuracies make me lulz, but it's just a cute thing to watch on Sunday night when I don't want to think.

*spoiler* from what I've read, Lancelot is coming back next season. For how long? Don't have a clue. Just what I heard.

I hope they use Morgana more next season. And once you're finished with the season, you'll understand why. They don't utilize her at all in a good fashion in the last few episodes. :\

There is actually one legend that says Gwenivere was a lady's maid. Not one of the more popular ones, though, but it does exist. Go figure.

Now you have me wondering!!

It's not been made into a movie or even a miniseries that I'm aware of, but have you tried reading Stephen Lawhead's (http://www.stephenlawhead.com/)Pendragon Cycle (http://www.stephenlawhead.com/books/pendragoncycle/taliesin.shtml)? Very good series and the most hitorically accurate telling of the Arthurian Tales I've ever encountered. I love what he's doing/done with the Robin Hood (http://www.stephenlawhead.com/books/kingraven/hood.shtml) legend.

Yep, I have read those, way back when they first came out.

Mary Stewart's books are probably my favourites.

I love Merlin - the fantasy aspect, the total historical inaccuracies and Britishness of it just pushes my buttons.

I tell myself that Merlin didn't really exsist anyway and try to ignore the total anachronisms that abound. After all I have watched (god forbid) Camelot and First Knight, so really it's not that bad.

I agree about more Morgana. I want to see how she turns out and if she becomes Morgan Le Fey.

I've got hooked on the fic from this fandom. There's some wonderful stories out there. So much of it's Arthur/Merlin, and strangely for me I'm actually reading more of it than anything else. I'm happy to rec some if you like :) There's also some thoughtfull meta out there that I've just started reading - I love meta.

Arthur grows more and more during the episodes and I liked him much more at the end than the beginning.

I know, I ADORE the musical Camelot despite everything. I actually got to see Richard Harris on stage in a touring production years and year ago. It was wonderful!

It's not a fic reading show for me - few are [g] But thank you :)

Glad to hear about Arthur. I am hopeful!

I'm enjoying the series...

But, as you know (Since you've heard me do it) I grumble about the inaccuracies of the episodes...

"Camelot? Pendragon wasn't in Camelot!"

"Arthur wasn't raised by his father!"

"Merlin isn't the same general age as Arthur!"

"That can't be the right castle for the time period!"

"Chain mail and plate mail? It's too soon!"

etc, etc, etc...

But, let me grumble quietly over the inaccuracies, and otherwise... I'm happy.

*polite cough*

There is actually a version of the Arthurian legend where Arthur is raised by Uther (and bugger if it escapes my memory right now) but that is a ridiculously rare version that only medieval literature types have even read so I really don't accept that explanation anyway. As I said *points below*, think of Merlin as Smallville for Arthur and you'll get along fine.

You have my sympathies though, both of you, even Indy has been slightly spoiled by my Egyptology degree *grin*.

Huh... didn't know that. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a version where Arthur is raised by the Lady of the Lake.

I haven't watched Smallville, but I can see the correlation...

Yeah, I bet one day, when they do a sitcom or drama in a pharmacy, I'll probably scream at the tv quite a bit.

I do now for pharmaceutical commercials.

She has lovely hair. She has the sort of colouring I always imagined Charlotte has, except with lighter eyes.

I really wish somebody somewhere would make a a TV series or a movie using the actual time period

Now what exactly do you mean by actual time period? Because, depending on which version of the myth you subscribe to, there are currently (I think) four different periods of history that Arthur may have lived (if he lived at all).

Personally, I subscribe to the Welsh Iron Age chief theory, but of course I would *grin*

I think of Merlin as being the Smallville of Arthurian legend - just leave your books and knowledge at the door because none of it applies here. Doesn't stop it being fun as hell though. :)

I got really sick of the stocks too. Hopefully in S2 Arthur will stop letting him take the blame for everything.

As I said to Dejla, something that doesn't involve a fantasy land castle would be a good place to start. I ask for little LOL

Yes, I like that theory as well, so lets pick that one and instruct the TV types to go forth and produce [g]

Never seen Smallville, so I assume it's not really Superman?

Oh, I'm watching it and I had heard it wasn't very historically accurate, I was just a little flabbergasted at how bad. And people complained about Convington Cross! Which I liked even so [g]

Date: 2009-08-19 05:16 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] dejla.livejournal.com
Hmm. I suppose it depends on what period you decide Arthur was--although anachronisms in terms and costuming do frequently pull me out of a show.

So what period would work for you?

Anything that doesn't involve a big honking fantasy land castle would be a fine place to start [g] And I'd throw away all the shiny fake velvet - they must have hit a closeout at the fabric store!

Date: 2009-08-19 09:17 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] dejla.livejournal.com
So you're looking at probably tenth through twelfth century AD, probably Celtic in nature? or earlier - sixth and seventh? Possibly layered tunics for both men and women, sideless surcoats, a kind of tights or breeches on the men, but more likely chainmail than any real armor?

And fortresses instead of castles.

I can see that.

Preferably early sixth century, but I'm easy :) As long as there's no damn castles LOL

I have a nice linen set, a plain greyish-natural tunic with long straight sleeves which button at the wrists and a blue linen sideless surcoat which I love in summer because it's so cool. Very nice for the hot days.

My full Tudor I only wear in the winter, and it's not velvet, it's brocade. And it's still hot.

I think the last time I saw any version of Merlin was in 98, NBCs min series version...come to think of it, it seems like it's been a while since NBC did a fantasy mini series. There was Merlin, Alice in Wonderland, and 10th Kingdom, that I recall seeing but those were all quite a long time ago
