There is an interesting portrayal of the man in The Alienist (http://www.amazon.com/Alienist-Novel-Caleb-Carr/dp/0812976142/). Lots of other 19th century historical figures too.
If you haven't read it, "The Alienist" does its best to portray the yellow journalists, politicos, Boss Tweed, the Delmonico brothers and their restaurant, ... lots of other interesting stuff from that period and is well worth the read.
