First Time Ever

I ran into somebody I don't know using one of my icons, as her default actually, which is cool. I didn't realize some of my icons had drifted out to third and fourth generation users [g] However, I went to her LJ, and come to find she hasn't credited me, or anyone else, whose icons she's using. So I'm wondering if I should pass on to her that it's good LJ netiquette to credit icons or not? It's not a big deal, just wondering since I've never run into the situation before.

Sometimes I'll see people posting in icon communities to the effect of "I've had these and don't know who made them, and just found out I should be crediting. Anyone know whose they are?" But I'm not sure what I would do if they weren't asking.

Maybe just drop a comment saying, "Hey, so cool to see someone I don't know using one of mine, and as your default too!" and not mentioning credit right away? Then see how they respond?

GMTA! I did do just that [g] She'd used the icon commenting on another LJ, so I left a comment telling her how cool it was to see my icon being used.

What is the accepted procedure for crediting? I have icons from a few people, and have never understood how to credit.

In the icon notes, you just put something like 'by beeej' .

I don't worry about getting credit for my icons. Once they're out there in the ether, they're on their own. *grin* The only ones I really care about are the ones I make as gifts. Not so much that *I'm* credited but that they stay with that person. I don't even use those icons. No one else should either. But my general icons are free to anyone.

OTOH, every icon maker has their own rules and they should be respected. The fact that I don't care doesn't mean that others don't care either.

As for my artwork, if it's signed, I expect full credit and proper netiquette to be used. A link back is one thing. If someone takes my manips or art, erases my sig and reposts it as their own, I'm going to be highly pissed. Or even just reposts my art without my permission. That kind of action is totally uncool. Signed works are just that: signed, and should receive proper respect.

I never care much about credit, because often things get passed on/saved without remembering who they were by.

But, weirdly? I came across an RPer on Greatestjournal, of all places, using the icon I'm commenting with for her RPed Illyria journal. Now, I have an Illyria RP journal myself over at perfectblue, but she didn't use any of THOSE icons. Just this one, which I only use for me. And she had me credited. I thought it was so odd, because I rarely use it outside my journal.

that's totally kosher. Somebody did that for me - when I was new to LJ, I didn't know anything about icon etiquette. She did it in a nice way, so it didn't put me off.

If it were me, I'd want to be told. I'd have an anxious moment of guilt, but I'd still be grateful to you for telling me.

I have icons that I copied from people who copied them from other people and never credited! But I'd be happy to give credit if the maker asked.

alot of the pics i use, others have made verrrry similiar croppings, and one of the ones i spotted was actually not mine.

funny story: i got a comment in my icon journal from someone wanting to use my default icon on this LJ... the one that has my "trys" on it. hee. i uploaded the base for her. :D

In this case, it's definitely mine. It's an icon I made and then added text to by request. It's not just a crop, but an icon that's had textures and brushes added. It's the one in this comment with text added (you can see it on my icon adoption page)

i'd suggest it's good netiquette she credits her icon makers. in my userpics, i even say "screencap by so-and-so, icon by me."
