I have two tickets to the University of Utah's Tanner Humanities Center showing of Coriolanus on Feb. 22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is just five hours away :D It's a noon screening, so will have to go up Friday after work. Fingers crossed it's not snowing through the mountain passes. Maybe we should get chains just in case.
Don't Tell Me That!
Feb. 1st, 2014 01:15 pmSo, out of curiosity, I clicked over to the National Theatre Live website, after reading that they were doing an encore streaming of Coriolanus, certain that if there were any viewing here in the States, it would be like in New York. Oh, fooey, I was wrong. The closest showing to me is in Grass Valley, CA and this cracks me up. Grass Valley is the little town in the foothills of the Sierra where my great-great grandparents settled in the 1860s, and I've never visited, not discovering this fact till a few years ago. And here I find that it's the closest place to see Coriolanus. Close being relative: it's 600+ miles away, over Donner Pass, in the winter. A 10 hour drive. But hey, close! You know, if it weren't winter, I would be so tempted [sighs] I shouldn't have looked.
ETA: Hmmm.... whatever location thingie they're using has the mileage all messed up. It has Grass Valley being under 200 miles away. So ignoring where they think I am, and looking at the list, it loos like U of U in SLC may have a showing. Must investigate further!

Sitting at work, waiting for a ride home, and pondering the next SHIELD Team 7 story. So, my questions: if a person were half Midgardian half Asgardian , and DNA were run how intensive would the test have to be to raise a flag? I'm thinking there probably already is Asgardian blood on Earth, all those wars and visits... Anyway, I know next to nothing on the subject, and would like the section of the story dealing with it to be at least somewhat plausible.
Other question : does anybody remember Agents of SHIELD giving any sort of time reference to May's 'cavalry' incident? Not sure how long ago it happened.

The Posting Thing
Jan. 22nd, 2014 05:41 pmI really suck at it lately. I've been trying to comment more, so that's something.
Nin and I went to Best Friends in Kanab, finally!, on Saturday. I mean, they are the reason I even really know about this area, which is the reason I live here now, and I'd never visited. And I've been a member since before I had internet. We had a lovely tour, I chatted with some wonderful dogs, and petted lots of kitties. What an amazing place it is, and the goal, that we can save them all, I really hope so. Nin and I think we'll become volunteers, even if all we do is walk the dogs, and it's only two hours away from us. All the staff we met I felt such a connection to -- they're me. By the end, me and the lady who gave the tour were all teary and hugging each other. I think I'd resisted going, because it would make me sad, but it's actually a place of hope, even for the most abused and neglected pets. Yeah, I shed some tears, but most of them were happy ones.

End of Year Recap: 2013
Jan. 11th, 2014 04:12 pmAnd from the second part of 2013:
Rainbow Connection
Hulk likes tickles, and rain in the sunshine. Lightening is good too.
Fair Winds And Following Seas
Two very different women find they have more in common than they might have thought.
Vigil
Ezra watches over Tony as he recovers from open heart surgery.
Priorities
Tony knows what his priorities are.
Snow Angel
After Extremis, Pepper doesn't think she'll feel normal ever again.
You May Not Pass This Way Again
A chance meeting at a party, one man's dream versus another's, can change your future.
At The Edge Of Our Hope
This wasn't the Apocalypse Methos signed up for.
For 2013 as a whole, a lot of short pieces, but some longer ones interspersed. There was unexpected Hulk, Pacific Rim, and Walt Disney. A lot of closure, a lot of Tony, and Howard Stark finally makes an appearance on the page. The bonds of friendship and forgiveness held center stage, and as some doors closed, others were opened for this year's batch of stories -- God willing :D
Thank you to everyone who read, left comments, and played sounding board. You're the best!

End of Year Recap: 2013
Jan. 11th, 2014 03:55 pmI wrote more in 2013 than I thought I did, both started during the year and finished during the year for the longer ones. From the first half of 2013:
Too Young For Heaven
Sometimes, the only way to escape the dark, and the demons that haunt you, is to have friends who refuse to let you fall.
And My Heart Was Colder When You'd Gone
Chris is ready to put the past behind him, but is Charlotte willing to step into the future with him?
'Til These Memories Are Pearls
After New York, Tony tries to pick up the pieces of the life he had before that day the Tesseract awoke.
If I Never Knew You
After Tony Stark's unexpected visit, Charlotte realizes she needs to take her own advice and confide her fears to Methos.
Riding Into the Sunrise
Methos and Tony resolve to control their destiny.
What's Rule Number One?
Tony has a lot to be grateful for - even if he did forget rule number one.
Equivocal Coalescence
Their whole world changed when Tony revealed he was Iron Man, but that wasn't nearly the end of it.
Green Tea
Bruce Banner is really, really mad. He is!

Unrelated Bits
Jan. 11th, 2014 03:18 pmWe finally saw the first Hunger Games movie, and liked it enough that I may have to check out the books at some point.
'Justified' is back! Wheee!
Watched the first ep of 'Killer Women' and really enjoyed it. Added bonus: The Mavericks opening and closing the episode with their music.
We're going to go see 'Saving Mr. Banks' tomorrow.
I feel like writing, but not sure what. There's always my Queen of Swords sequel that I've been working on intermittently. One day, I will finish it! Or the sequel to 'White As Snow, Red As Blood', which is set during 'The Avengers'. Or the Agents of SHIELD/Isla De Muerta/Prate Treasure one I've been pondering. Or going back to the Old West portion of my series and write the one with James Norrington. No idea.
Ladies Assemble this year is going to be at Disneyland instead of Vegas for the fifth annual. This all started accidentally with Captain America, so for the second one, we're mixing it up.
Watched 'Almost Human' finally. We had 5 eps on the DVR. We really like it, and will keep watching.
How fandom is changing. Who'd think you'd see a tweet from Orlando Jones about Yuletide and the number of Sleepy Hollow stories and that he's going to read them all!?!? Speaking of which, I've never participated in Yuletide, but I thought it was for small fandoms?
Wouldn't think Sleepy Hollow would be a small fandom.
Been recording Dracula, but have yet to watch. Not sure we ever will at this rate!

'At the Edge of Our Hope' (01/01)
Jan. 6th, 2014 06:14 pmTitle: At The Edge Of Our Hope
Author:
ithildin
Written for:
merriman
Characters: Methos, Stacker Pentecost, Mako Mori, Amanda, Hercules Hansen, Raleigh Becket.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: No Highlander character death, but there is crossover character death.
Notes: I wrote Pacific Rim—go figure! It was totally not planned, the idea for the story popping into my head as I read my recipient's request post. Gen, crossover w/Pacific Rim, thanks to my beta and research assistant,
ninjababe, for her invaluable help. This story follows the events of the film, with added background from the graphic novel via the Pacific Rim Wiki. Written for the Highlander Shortcuts Holiday Fic Exchange.
Summary: This wasn't the Apocalypse Methos signed up for.
At The Edge Of Our Hope
( RUST, IT CRAWLED UP NEARLY EVERY METAL SURFACE OF HONG KONG'S SHATTERDOME. You could smell it, mixed with the stink of the ocean's rot; decay, desperation, humanity's final curtain, waiting to fall. )

RIP, my puppy
Jan. 3rd, 2014 05:47 pmDaisy had a stroke over the new year, she'd been failing for a while, she was so old, over 16. We didn't know how we were gong to get her to the vet, she was so heavy. But bless him, the vet came to us this afternoon, so Daisy died in peace at home, and he took care of all the arrangements. Daisy, I think, either thought she was a big cat, or the cats were all tiny dogs. She used to try and clean them, and some of the cats actually liked it. Perhaps she'll haunt the house with her pals Wellington and Tuppence. I'm sure they're happy to be together again.
'You May Not Pass This Way Again' (01/01)
Dec. 30th, 2013 07:20 pmTitle: You May Not Pass This Way Again
Fandoms: Iron Man/Marvel Movies, Pirates of the Caribbean, Highlander
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Tony Stark, Howard Stark, Peggy Carter, Walt Disney, Clark Gable, Charlotte Sparrow/Black
Notes: I've always said that the Jack Sparrow I write is the one from the end of the first movie, after he shoots Barbossa, the Jack with the façade stripped way. As this series as progressed, I began to realize that Charlotte's Jack isn't necessarily the exact one presented in the films. This is my explanation.

I just may be writing a story that gives some background on Charlotte's Jack Sparrow, as opposed to the one in the movies, that includes Howard Stark and Walt Disney. Yeah. So, up till now, I'd used comics dating for when SHIELD was created, really it only came into play during the Peggy Carter story I wrote a few years back. But now, I think I need to do some retconning. That short about Peggy that was on the IM III DVD seems to be saying that Howard created it, or mostly created it, two-three years after the end of WWII. So, 1950ish? Basically, a few months after the end of the Peggy fic, there's going to be a party at Howard's, and I need to date it. I also need to rewrite some of the Peggy story. Poked around the Marvel wiki, but it keeps hanging when I try to get to pages.
Look! A real post!

Highlander Holiday Exchange Stories are now being posted -- and yes, I did finish and submit mine. A few days early even! No one is more surprised than I am.
'Snow Angel' (01/01)
Dec. 27th, 2013 02:41 pmI actually managed to write a Christmas fic this year -- even if it is a few days late. This takes place right after 'What's Rule Number One?', set just after the end of Iron Man III.

No one told me Disney had Hell Land
Dec. 10th, 2013 01:53 pmor, this is what we get for being spontaneous.
strangevisitor7 was flying in to L.A. on business, and since it was only a 6 hour drive, we decided to head down after work on Friday. And
ninjababe was just two days out from her birthday, so we decoded to go to Disneyland on Saturday. We were pooped, but still, we were having a grand time. And it had rained throughout the morning, and once it cleared up, it was cold - cold for SoCal. But that did a lovely job of clearing out some of the crowds. About 8pm, Nin started feeling unwell, by 9pm, the poor thing had lost the contents of her stomach. We will never look at A Small World the same way again. Our first thought was food poisoning, which would have been bad, since all three of us shared appetizers for dinner. But after getting Nin cleaned up, and waiting around till she felt she could travel (we were 45 minutes from our hotel), Casey and I were both still feeling fine. So we figured she had gastroenteritis aka 'stomach flu'. Of course, that brought up my next worry - it's highly contagious, and I'd drunk from her water bottle, soda, etc.. Not to mention we had to share a bed this trip. Anyway, we get ready to leave L.A. on Sunday, and I start getting texts from my assistant, telling me that the gorge was closed between Mesquite and St. George, that most of the streets in St. George were closed, and that there were people stranded in the gorge overnight due to the snowstorm we'd had on Saturday. I know if you live in an area that gets snow all the time, 6-11 inches isn't a big deal, but our cities don't even own snowplows! And we live in a rural area, which makes it worse. So we don't know if we can get home, and Nin's still not feeling great, so we decide to book a room in Vegas, and for Nin to go see a doctor Monday morning before we head home. Last night, we finally make it home. And guess what? Gastroenteritis really DOES have a 48 hour incubation period! I am so sick right now, I want to pull a rock over me. And it's been so cold -- makes it hard to remember that a few months ago it was 105 on a daily basis. It's been down to 5 at night. Our chickens are very unhappy, poor things. Though I must say, it's so pretty outside! I'm pretty sure this will be one Dland trip we won't forget.
